Klaus von Klitzing at the LNE for a conference on the current state of his research on the Quantum Hall Effect

Klaus von Klitzing, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1985 for his discovery of the Quantum Hall Effect, will hold a conference on Tuesday 27 November in Trappes. He will review the last experimental results achieved by his team on the subject: : QHE research in graphene, understanding of electron-electron interaction phenomena and measurements of the current distribution in QHE devices.

Abstract (pdf)

The "Absorbed dose and air kerma primary standards" workshop acts are available online

The LNE-LNHB organised, jointly with the BIPM, the first workshop on ionising radiation . metrology. It was held on the LNE premises from 9 to 11 May 2007. Many workshop international companies attended the workshop and tackled the latest evolutions in methods of primary measurements by calorimetry and ionisation chambers.

Free copies of the workshop acts are now available on the LNE-LNHB website.

A high accuracy electrodes measuring equipment has just arrived at the LNE in Trappes

Machine à mesurer des électrodes

The LNE is developing a new calculable Thompson-Lampard, capacitance standard, which aim is to allow, via a measurement chain, to determine the Von Klitzing RK constant with a target uncertainty of 1.10-8.

One of the main limitation in obtaining such an uncertainty level lies in the cylindrical defects that can be found in the electrodes. And these defects must not be greater than 100 nm. That’s why mid-February 2007 a machine, capable of measuring the future electrodes with an uncertainty in the order of 30 nm (1 σ), was delivered in the premises of the LNE’s Maxwell building at Trappes. Manufactured by the SYMETRIE company, this machine is based on the “dissociated metrology structure” concept developed by the ENSAM-Lille, and already exploited at the LNE for the national angular reference and in the nanometrology project. And electrodes manufacturing will start early March 2007.

Quality measurements for enhanced treatment and lower costs

The technical committee METCHEM (Chemistry metrology), of EURAMET held its annual meeting from 6 to 9 February 2007, at the Portuguese metrology institute IPQ in Lisbon. For the first time, the plenary session was opened to “field” partners, laboratories, institutes and the industry. They have presented their specific approaches to improve the reliability of their measurements. Water producers have implemented procedures to ensure measurements traceability and validate the analytical protocols.

Laboratories have clearly expressed their requirements for reference materials for the instrument calibration, together with improved traceability of the value assigned to the capability tests. Similarly, in the emerging sectors, such as biology and clinical chemistry, national metrology institutes (NMI) have a crucial role to play in order to improve the quality and the comparability of measurements. Given as an example, this illustration of the studies on cholesterol where measurement quality allows enhanced treatment and cost cutting. (pdf - 80 Ko)

"Innovation and knowledge transfer", theme of the 13th International Metrology Congress.

The 13th International Metrology Congress will be held in Lille from 18 to 21 June 2007. A major meeting place in the field of metrology and a place for exchanges between the industry and scientists, the 2005 edition had brought together 830 participants coming from 65 countries.

The LNE and the national metrology laboratories will be present during this event:

The themes selected for this 13th edition of the Congress are the following :
