First European meeting on Metrology of Biofuels - 6-7 November 2008 in Strasbourg - Call for papers

This first workshop is organised by LNE and PTB in cooperation with the Collège Français de Métrologie and aims at exchanging ideas and experiences with scientists involved in this complex area to foresee better understanding of the metrological needs with respect to technical and socio-economic issues, to support production and use of energy from biomaterials and to identify challenges, to be solved in the near future.

Biofuels are considered as an alternative source of energy complementary to fossil fuels used today.

Directive 2003/30/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 8 May 2003 promote the use of biofuels and other renewable fuels for transport.

Within the Directive, the European Union makes recommendations for partially replacing fossil fuels by biofuels.

The workshop deals with metrology on all biomaterials used for energy production : biogas, liquid biofuel and solid materials. These must also be considered together with fossil fuels since both often used in parallel or in combination.

All interested scientists are invited to participate in this important workshop. Submissions of abstracts for oral or poster presentations are welcome.
The official language will be English.

The Abstracts written in English sould be mailed not later than September 30, as an attached file to :
Dr. Jean-Remy Filtz, LNE
Dr. Harro Bauer, PTB

Workshop on the Boltzmann Constant - register now

You are invited to attend the Third Workshop on progress in determining the Boltzmann Constant, taking place on 7 April 2008. The workshop is hosted by LNE-INM/CNAM and supported by the Science and Metrology Committee of the Académie des Sciences..

The scientific community is considering changing the definition of certain units in the international SI system, particularly in the field of temperature, where the kelvin would no longer be defined by the triple point of water but by a fixed value of the Boltzmann Constant. However, the current uncertainty for the value of this constant is considered to be too high for a redefinition of the kelvin. Laboratories around the world (NIST, PTB, LPL, IRiM, LNE etc.) are working on different techniques to redetermine the Boltzmann Constant with a lower uncertainty. This workshop will focus on the progress they have made.

To attend this workshop, which will be held at the national technology and research institute CNAM, La Plaine Saint-Denis (just outside Paris), please send an e-mail to barbotin@cnam.fr
Participation fee: €15.
